The Pit also hosts many student performances and protests. Kristin Garriss shows her support for free speech on First Amendment Day (September 29, 2009) by taping her mouth to remember Henry Brown and the denial of his First- and Fourteenth-Amendment rights. Brown was arrested in 1964 in Louisiana after participating in a library sit-in.

Banned Books Week is another annual event that draws UNC-Chapel Hill students and faculty to the Pit. This sign is part of a display of books that have been or are currently banned in schools, placed in the Pit by Bull's Head Bookshop manager Erica Eisdorfer.

Chris Snider is one of 200 Superior Mechanical, Inc. employees building Greenbridge, a new apartment building in Chapel Hill. Although Snider specializes in heating and air installation, he performs a variety of tasks at the construction site, from making small repairs to lifting materials into the building using a crane.
